Look up Heiki Seppa (and his book: form emphasis for metalsmiths), then practice stretching metal with a hammer like it’s a clay. Once you can push it forward and back on compound curves, you’ll be able to build in the right tension to get flares to kick the right way without kinking. Don’t be afraid of thick metal. And anneal, a lot. I walked past a Claire’s (where my holes were started, with a piercing gun, because I was young and couldn’t get to an actual piercing shop). I saw a Hot Topic (where I bought my first pair of plugs and tapers with which I would later impatiently brutalize my ears). Tonight as I’m sitting down with a sketchpad, pouring liquid metal in my home studio, cranking up electricity to anodize patterns on titanium, I’m excited to think that so many artists/designers/craftspeople are out there working in their own way to develop a positive culture of body art that affirms the beauty in each of us.
